Iceland-Try the whale

Iceland! Arrived on the red-eye and thought it'd be clever booking the transfer to Reykjavik that included a stop at a geothermal pool, the Blue Lagoon. Once we got there it WAS tops. . . it just took 3 hours for the first bus to arrive at 9:30am. Chairs at the Icelandic airport are moderately comfortable.

Geothermal spas are what you wish the best bath of your life could be, if only the water stayed hot, you could float with ease, and the tub were long enough that both your shoulders and knees might be warmed at once.

Jet-lagged but soft-skinned we went to to Sjavargrillid and had incredible food- Minsk whale (10/10), perch and tusk. Zounds, batman, delectable. Some sleep, a trip to a volcano museum (5/10) and some strolling in the windy rain (6/10) and a woolen hat (7/10) for day 2.  Too rainy for the Northern Lights, hopefully tomorrow.

Two omissions: 1) views of Reykjavik from a church Hallgrimskirkja where the winds take your breath away and 2) garlic bread with cheese: 1.5 inch thick soft brown whole grain bread with butter and garlic on both sides and browned bubbly cheese on top. For the vegetarians out there scandalized by whale, dream about the bread.

Tons of street art - will upload when camera/ comp capable and not writing on a phone. Takk and goodnight.

  1. Yay! So happy to read your update -- and looking forward to many more so I can vicariously take a 3-month trip to Europe. :) The Blue Lagoon is the only reason I want to visit Iceland. Can't wait to see your photos.
